2020 has been one of the most eventful years of the century thus far. It kicked off with the Australian wildfires wiping out forests and was followed by a global pandemic that threatened humanity. We haven’t seen destruction like this in a long time, and we are all feeling unsure and vulnerable. When we were all trying to come together as one and help each other, we witnessed a horrific act of injustice. An act committed by the very symbol of what is meant to protect people and serve society.
The video clip of George Floyd’s death has sent shockwaves throughout the world. We are all connected via the web and could instantly feel the betrayal of governance and total disregard of human life. As we all were self-isolating and browsing our social media, a single clip unveiled the corrupt and racist system that has ruled the global economic and political power for centuries. It’s been staring at us for some time, but this time our reaction as a species is different. The murderer was holding his hands in his pockets as he looked up at the camera with a look that said: What you gonna do about it?
People started to take action. Across the world people have been marching the streets demanding justice for all people. The crowds are made up by multiracial young activists who genuinely believe that the old system is evil and must be buried without any tombstone. By compliance or by force. In Bristol protesters tore down the statue of a well known slave trader whom I purposely omit to mention by name. He had taken at least 100,000 africans across the Atlantic passage, and at least one fifth died on the journey. The rest was forced to slave under horrific conditions for centuries, yet society puts him on a pedestal. He was part of history’s most evil injustice and his statue was dumped in the harbour where his ships once had left for sail to trade human lives. This was a man who built his fortune on slavery and used the blood money to get respected in his city. By drowning his sculpture, people are not only expressing their frustrations of the oppressive elitists, but they’re also taking a stand and saying: What this man did was wrong, and praising such an evil person is equally wrong.
Anyone who fails to speak up are silently and unknowingly supporting this evil. Most people don’t even consider themselves racist, but can often display attitudes which suggests subconscious superiority complex. As soon as you think you are better than someone you don’t know, you are judging the unknown. A lot of western people have been woken up by the events and are now speaking up to support their fellow brothers and sisters of other races.
Britain has a lot of blood on its hands. Along with the other European imperialist nations, they have an extremely dark past they fail to condemn. After all these years of oppression and exploitation, countries across the world are in debt to their former colonial powers. One has to wonder: HOW??? Why is it okay to pillage whole continents and build global domination using human slaves and demand payment from the people you have oppressed? The greed of these men is insatiable. Morally it is an absolute violation of humanity. Yet political leaders of 2020 fail to acknowledge the malpractice and revoke the debt. Africa has one of the most resourceful lands on the planet, yet the bribery of corrupt leaders have enslaved the continent financially. Europe’s leaders have a responsibility to unlock those economic chains and abolish the debt. They must clean up the mess they have made. There is nothing black people own to the white elitists - they must allow for equality before they have a revolution on their door step.
People are sick and tired on the inequality. People have had enough of police brutality. People are struggling financially. The world is facing a recession which will leave the disadvantaged poorer, and the fat cats even richer. Unless the gap between the haves and the have-nots is addressed and everyone on top acknowledges that Black Lives Matter, the fight for justice will only escalate. Using of a police state will only fuel more anger and aggression. The old imperialistic ways of accumulating wealth by oppressing others are over. We are far more advanced and knowledgable today, and must all combat these imperialistic views that’s holding us back from prospering as a collective organism. The last six months have isolated us physically, but connected us mentally and emotionally. People have had time to reflect on what really matters, and what being human really means.
It used to be ok to act racist, but now it is not right to stand and watch others being racist. We all have to step in and take action. We have to change the way we treat each other and the way we view each other. We are all children of God, children of the Sun and of Mother Nature and we will only thrive if we unite as one. When you can look at a person opposite to you in every way with an open heart and a compassionate smile, you are being unbiased. Someone of a different race, different religion, different sex, different social class, and you still see them as your brother or sister - that’s when you know you are not racist. We have a long way to go, and the journey has just begun.
